Spring time is here and for me that means breakfast smoothies!
If any of you are like me and are not a fan of breakfast, this is for you! During the colder months I eat some instant oatmeal or maybe a meal replacement shake. But, once my favorite yummy fruits are back in season I have a spring smoothie in the morning. I have seen all different ways to create shakes. I’m not saying one is better than another but this is how I make mine.
First of all, I don’t ever freeze my fruit.
I think fresh fruit is better for starters. Every time I use frozen fruit I end up with chunks that aren’t blended completely in the bottom as well.
Second, I don’t put any dairy in my shakes.
I typically use almond milk in my smoothies. I like the vanilla best, but you can use whatever kind you want. Almond milk has slightly less calories and none of the hormones cow’s milk has. I used to think I needed yogurt to thicken my smoothie but I have traded that for my vegys, which brings me to the next component of my smoothies.
Add some greens!
Spinach is my go to green to add to my smoothie. I usually add it at the end so i can pack as much as possible in my magic bullet. I was leary of it when I first tried it but it truly does not make your shake taste like vegetables. It packs so many extra vitamins especially a good serving of iron.
The last thing I do is add a combination of fruit.
I usually only do 2 different types of fruit, just to keep it simple and fresh. My absolute favorite combination is banana and pineapple! Some of my other favs that I repeat pretty often are the oh so traditional strawberry & banana as well as orange & pineapple for a citrus kick. Sometimes I get a little more creative and do something like coconut milk instead of almond milk with banana for a pina colada taste. You can always switch out your almond milk for some fresh squeezed fruit just, but make sure you aren’t adding all that extra sugar of those bottled fruit juices off the grocery store shelf.
Just a few extra tips
Occasionally, when I have a real sweet tooth, I skip the fruit and I use my chocolate meal replacement protein and some peanut butter. You can truly get creative with your shakes and try any combination. One last little touch, I add some ice, if it’s a hot day and I’m taking my shake to go. Since all of my ingredients are coming out of the fridge, I usually drink it fast enough it doesn’t get warm when I’m staying at home.
I hope you enjoy!
This is my favorite way to get a breakfast down in the mornings and a great healthy habit to start now! Just remember: fresh fruit, almond milk, greens and a great fruit combo! Let me know your favorite combinations and tips too!
